What are the main aims of the course?
Primarily to provide existing or future community 'leaders' with a skill set, which enables them to achieve their own personal development and organisational objectives. Or in the words of one of the participants:

'to broaden the range of people involved in community leadership roles and to get the message across that whatever your background, race, culture or education, if you want to make a difference, you can contribute'.

The benefits of the course are best summarised by the feedback from some of the people who have been on OnCourse Programme.  See the Case Studies page.

Who is the course aimed at?
As a potential licensee you may be a Local Strategic Partnership, a voluntary sector infrastructure organisation, a training provider, a social enterprise, a local authority or from the private sector.  You may choose to run this programme to complement your existing training provision or to build the capacity of your local community.

The 200 people we have taken through the programme have developed greater competence and confidence in their roles on management committees and trustee boards or gone on to take up new roles in their neighbourhood.

An emerging benefit is how the programme meets the local government white paper “Strong and Prosperous Communities”.  By developing leadership skills, changing behaviour and building confidence the programme helps people be better prepared to respond to this new agenda.  It empowers them to have a voice and to be effective where they live and work, to respond more swiftly and decisively to change, to have a greater sense of shared responsibility and to value and build community cohesion.

What are the admission requirements?
There are no formal entrance requirements - What we are looking for is a commitment to completing the programme and becoming involved in community issues and contributing to the course ethos. Applicants need to complete an application form.

Who is running the Course?
OnCourse is a project delivered in Nottingham by Nottingham Development Enterprise (NDE), a regeneration charity - www.nde.org.uk (A Charity registered in England 1106174).

In 2001 NDE first researched and developed the programme in order to create a city leadership development and succession plan for Nottingham. The programme has since been piloted (2002), extensively evaluated, accredited and rolled out beyond Nottingham.

Course materials have been created with the help of specialist leadership development trainers.

What does it cost?

NDE is an organisation with charitable aims and as such endeavours to keep its training as affordable as possible, whilst ensuring that licensees have a product that is easy to implement.

For further information on the cost please contact Sandra Rose on sr@nde.org.uk

What course materials are provided?

A comprehensive package of materials include:

·         Branded promotional materials, tailored to requirements

·         Facilitator materials, including presentations and briefings

·         Hard copy learning materials for up to 30 participants

·         Training and briefing of your co-ordinator and facilitator

·         General advice and support

How long will it take?

This is a 12 month programme which includes 8-9 months of class contact time over 10 individual sessions plus an induction and a closing graduation.  Running in parallel to the sessions are project working groups where individuals will work with other participants on a real-life issue affecting their community.

A further three months allows time for the training of a co-ordinator and a facilitator and for the marketing and promotion of the programme.

Is the Course accredited?
Yes, through the National Open College Network and currently accredited at Levels 3 and 4.  Working towards the qualification is optional. As far as we are aware the OnCourse Community Leadership Programme was the first accredited community leadership programme in the UK.

Is the programme recognised by employers or professional associations?
Many employers have commented on how much their employees have benefited from attending the OnCourse programme and how relevant and transferable many of the skills are to the workplace. See Case Studies for feedback from employers.  OCN accreditation is recognised by most employers familiar with competenced based assessment methods.
